1. Support and expand programs offered by the Peralta Community College District
Help launch and support the Alameda
Transportation and Logistics Academic Support Initiative (ATLAS) to create a
self-contained transportation, warehousing, and logistics training facility
that will support multiple entry, mid, and higher end employment
opportunities in this industry cluster. This is a new collaborative
career path program led by the College of Alameda and the Workforce
Collaborative to build capacity along three training tracks that will
support the trade/logistics industry: (1) truck driving, (2) warehousing,
and (3) inventory control.

Workforce Collaborative; Teamsters; the Alameda Labor Council.
2. Assist the Oakland Unified School District in launching an International Transportation and Logistics Academy
Concept: Design, develop, and implement an
Oakland Unified School District International Trade and Transportation (ITT)
/ Goods Movement (GM) Academy at the high school level. The Academy
will offer a sequenced program of study that integrates academic and career
technical education curriculum including workplace competencies that engages
students in contextual learning so that they are able to complete a career
major in high school that prepares them for postsecondary study and
employment. It will provide both K-12 and adult education services.
The Academy plans to open its doors fall of 2008.
Champions: Oakland Unified School District.
3. Improve the T&L Workforce Preparation and Job Placement System
To meet the Partnership’s goals of job creation
and greater access to employment opportunities by Oakland residents, the T&L
Workforce Sub-Group has been established to include representatives from all
of the organizations providing training and job placement related to the
industry. Many of the cluster’s employers are also part of the group.
This group is: (1) engaging more employers in utilizing and informing the
public workforce delivery system; (2) improving the information flow between
employers and training providers to ensure T&L curriculum is market relevant
and programs are attuned to changes in the labor market; (3) improving the
access and connection between employers, training providers, and job
placement agencies (One Stop Career Centers) so that a greater number of
Oakland residents can access job opportunities in the T&L sector in Oakland;
(4) showcasing “success” stories (employers who are hiring locally and/or
working more proactively with the local workforce delivery system to improve
and utilize it; training programs that are expanded or created to enhance
career ladder opportunities for local residents).
Champions: T&L Cluster Workforce Development
Sub-Group; OMCC as convener.
