Green Tech Cluster

The Oakland region’s Green Industry Cluster is comprised of a variety of key institutions and companies, including the University of California, Berkeley; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and a host of emerging Green Industry companies including:  Amyris Biotechnologies, Borrego Solar, Blue Sky Bio-fuels, EarthSource Forest Products, Sun, Light & Power, Bright Source Energy, Touchstone Environmental, KEMA Green, Taylor Engineering, VBN Architects, and a host of other environmental engineering, geotechnical, design, and consulting firms.

The Green Industry Cluster Group has identified and is working on a number of strategic initiatives with the objective of capturing more of the emerging green tech and clean technology industries in Oakland and the region.

New! “The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the East Bay Green Corridor Partnership released a study on October 22, 2009, entitled “Building the East Bay Green Economy:  Critical Steps for Supporting and Engaging East Bay Green Businesses.

The report is the result of several months of outreach effort conducted by the Chamber and the Corridor to companies in five green subsectors:  Energy Efficiency; Solar Energy:  Green Building; Recycling and Reuse; and Environmental Consulting.  It summarizes the results of roundtable discussions held with each group about the opportunities and challenges to growth in their sub-sector.  The Chamber and Corridor are engaged in following up on many of the recommendations in this report.

The first recommendation to see immediate results is for the launch of a new chapter of Efficiency First, a national advocacy group for the energy efficiency sector.  The launch event for this group will be held at City Hall in Oakland on November 4th.  See the Chamber calendar of events for details.
